One of the primary means of communicating in your online class is through the use of the Discussion Board. Here, you will read messages posted by the instructor and classmates, post messages yourself, and

post replies to existing messages.

Explanation

The communication in the Discussion Board is

asynchronous, meaning that the people participating in the communication are not online at the same time. When you enter the discussion board, there are messages posted from different dates and times. A message you post will be read by your instructor and classmates sometime in the future, but you do not know exactly when.

The discussion board is divided into

groups. These groups can be available to everyone in the class or to specific students. They often address a certain topic or assignment. It is important to regularly monitor the discussion board for new messages.

The discussion in a group is often referred to as a threaded discussion. A threaded discussion is started with an initial message. As this message is read, replies are made to this initial message, creating the thread.

In some courses, your messages posted to the discussion board are a direct contribution to your course grade. It may be a grade for a specific assignment or for participation credit. For your message to be considered for maximum credit, it must make a significant contribution to the discussion at hand. A simple, “Yes, I agree.” message typically does not suffice.

When you are required to submit a long message in the discussion board, it is not recommended that you type the entry online in the message box. If access to the online classroom is interrupted for any reason while you are typing, you will lose your input. Instead, use Microsoft Word to type your response, copy the text in Word, and paste it into the discussion board message box when complete.
