Controlling Many Desktop Windows

Maximizing

Maximizing a window is very simple. First, find your browser's maximize button at the top-right corner of your browser window (as shown in the graphics below). This is the button to click to maximize your window.

Dragging the window to resize it allows you to size the window to exactly the dimensions you want.

  1. Each window has a small triangle on the bottom right-hand corner. Click on this and hold down your mouse button.

  2. Drag your mouse down and to the right to increase the size of your window.

  3. Release your mouse button when it is the desired size.

Minimizing

In Windows, you can also minimize a browser window. There is a button on the top-right corner of your browser right next to the maximize button. Click on this button to minimize the window - there is a button for it on the Taskbar, but it won't take up room on your desktop.

Using Multiple Windows

There are several ways to manage multiple windows:

  • Each new window that opens has a corresponding "button" on the taskbar on the bottom of your screen. Simply click on the window's icon to bring it up and make it "active".

  • You can also press (and hold down) the Alt key on your keyboard and press the Tab key at the same time. Next, hit your Tab key (while holding down the Alt key) to rotate through all your open windows. Simply take your fingers off the two keys when you're on the window you wish to have open.

  • You can also drag each window (by clicking on the window's Title bar, holding down the left mouse button and dragging it to an area where you can see parts of several windows at a time). Just click on any part of a window at any time to make it active (this doesn't work well on smaller monitors).

HINT: There are several browsers (such as Netscape 6.2) that do not have a drag triangle. For these browsers, position your cursor over the bottom right corner until it becomes a two-headed diagonal arrow, then drag.
